I've been the type of person who loves to read, but I mostly like to read non-fiction books. I would rarely do fiction unless it's a short story or if I just see it in a movie. I feel lazy for not reading fiction and call myself a book reader. One big reason I don't do fiction books is that I feel like it's only benefitting myself, whereas in non-fiction, I can help other people like The Five Love Languages does.
Don't get me wrong- I love stories! I'd just rather see them in movies than spend so much time sitting on a couch reading when I can help someone out there cope with some problem, with just a few lines from a non-fiction book. I am starting to realize though that reading non-fiction helps the imagination, your eloquence in language in general, and it makes for a good reference in writing or conversations. I am currently trying to finish a fiction novel by C.S. Lewis called, Out Of the Silent Planet, but I read most of it when I couldn't go back to sleep one night. I felt that reading was the best thing to do without getting out of bed and doing something productive.
Anyone out there who loves reading but aren't a big fan of fiction? If you do read fiction, what other benefits do you think reading fiction books have besides the ones I've mentioned?
